Blasphemy

Blasphemy

A Wednesday evening tweet from President Trump …

These are the things and events that happen when a sacred landslide election victory is so unceremoniously & viciously stripped away from great patriots who have been badly & unfairly treated for so long.

Mr. Trump’s words are not merely justification of a shameful and violent attack on our American democracy, and not merely a shameless lie, but quite simply blasphemy.

It is blasphemous to attribute holiness to something that is entirely profane. Whether or not God may use political leaders to advance God’s purposes (and we do pray that our leaders will advance God’s purposes of justice and righteousness and peace), and whether or not God has a preference in any particular election (and I believe that God cares little about whom we choose to elect, but much about how whomever we do elect chooses to act),  no politician may claim holiness because of their office and no elective “victory” is worthy of being named “holy.”

When this president claims that his (untrue) “election victory” is “sacred,” he is claiming for himself status and honor and glory that belong to God alone. And that is blasphemy.

  1. We are facing a very sad state of affairs, indeed. And it is very sad to see someone with such power use words so loosely.

  2. I believe that in our republic, my vote, your vote, and any other legitimate vote should be considered sacred, i.e. deserving of respect. The outcome of this election, however, is anything but sacred. Huge election irregularities and fraud have resulted in the election of a cognitively-impaired and undeniably corrupt candidate. I hope it is not blasphemous to say that this is not an election that our country can be proud of.

  3. Have you noticed that our president has started zero new wars in the last 4 years. He is the first president in 4 decades not to do so. He has also brokered a stable peace in the Middle East. I thank God for the sacred lives and treasure that this president has saved. I hope that we can say the same after President Biden’s term.

  4. I believe many unnamed (Craig Driver) otherwise respectable Trump supporters let his behavior slide believing that the ends justify the means. I had trouble understanding the ends and certainly did not support the means.

If only everyone had an 8 year old holding them accountable the world would be so better place. If you cannot justify / explain our leaders actions to your young children that is a pretty good sign that we do not have the right leaders.
